A healthy environment starts at home By Sirilak Narongtanupone

You might have noticed that on every Pipper Standard bottle is a short phrase: “A healthy environment starts at home.” We want to tell you why we emphasize this message.

Allergy rates globally have doubled or even tripled over the last decade amid rapid urbanization and industrialization—two factors that have contaminated the natural environment across the planet—and as the use of petrochemical-derived ingredients has soared.

Children nowadays experience all kinds of allergies, far more than their parents’ and grandparents’ generations did. We believe this is connected both to a rise in environmental pollution due to the explosive growth of cities and industry worldwide and also to the increased use by individuals of petrochemical-derived ingredients in household cleaners and personal care products.

People live differently today than we did in the past. We used to live in houses with open windows that offered better ventilation. Today, we increasingly live in condominiums and work in office buildings where windows are sealed and air circulates via ducts. The chemicals we bring into these spaces can’t escape. With our significantly higher use of household cleaners and personal care products made from petrochemical-derived ingredients, we have never before exposed ourselves to so many toxic chemicals.

Individually, we can’t meaningfully impact the pollution outside our homes, but we do have full control over what we bring into our homes.

When my partner Pete suffered an allergic reaction to chemical ingredients in a household cleaner, we realized that everything we brought into our house we absorbed either by touching it or breathing it.

At first, we didn’t know what caused his allergic reaction. Was it something he ate? Was it from chemicals at his office? He stopped going to the office and began logging everything he ate or used. We determined that the culprit was a fabric softener. We threw away all our clothes, trying to rid our house of the toxic allergens. We began researching ingredients in household cleaners and personal care products, and realized that we can choose natural formulas instead of petrochemical ones.

·         -  Eat healthy foods and exercise regularly.
 - Read labels carefully and choose products with natural ingredients. Synthetic chemicals can be hazardous to our health.  When certain petrochemical substances are exposed to fluctuations in temperature or pressure, their properties can change and produce toxic, cancer-causing byproducts such as formaldehyde or 1,4-Dioxane.
